Writing Technical Requirements for Concurrent NEMA and IP Enclosure Procurement

NEMA Standards

NEMA and IP are distinct protection rating systems; procurement documents should not directly substitute one for the other. NEMA types cover personnel protection, falling dirt, windblown dust, rain, sleet, snow, oil, coolant, corrosion, hose-directed water, external ice, and limited submersion. IP ratings primarily define ingress protection against solid foreign objects and water.

When specifying both NEMA and IP ratings, define the target types, test specimens, and test conditions separately. For example, specify exposure to rain, snow, and windblown dust for outdoor control cabinets; water pressure, direction, and washdown frequency for washdown areas; maximum water depth and duration for low-lying areas; and material/gasket compatibility for chemical environments.

Technical documents must list the complete configuration, including doors, gaskets, locks, viewing windows, pushbuttons, connectors, cable glands, fans, air conditioners, filters, and removable panels. An empty enclosure passing a test does not guarantee identical protection with all accessories installed. Ensure the test sample matches the final delivered product in structure and accessories during acceptance.
