When selecting a NEMA enclosure, do not just look at the numbers like NEMA 1, NEMA 4, or NEMA 6. Start by analyzing the installation site and daily environmental hazards. Define requirements based on mounting location, dust types, water sources, oils or chemicals, potential submersion, heat dissipation, and maintenance needs.

For example, indoor control room equipment prioritizes personnel safety and falling dirt protection. Outdoor gear must withstand rain, sleet, snow, windblown dust, and external icing. Enclosures near machine tools face coolants, lubricants, metal shavings, and vibration. Equipment in low-lying areas requires assessing water-rise and temporary submersion risks.

After initial selection, verify doors, gaskets, locks, viewing windows, cable glands, removable panels, and cooling components. An enclosure body meeting a NEMA type does not guarantee the assembled accessories maintain the same rating. For custom projects, provide site photos, mounting locations, equipment lists, cable entry points, and cleaning methods during quoting for an accurate technical solution.
