NEMA 3, NEMA 3R, and NEMA 4 are all suitable for outdoor use, but their protection priorities differ. NEMA 3 targets rain, sleet, snow, external ice formation, and windblown dust. NEMA 3R focuses primarily on rain, sleet, snow, and external icing, without prioritizing windblown dust protection.

NEMA 4 offers broader protection, covering outdoor rain, snow, and windblown dust, as well as splashing water and hose-directed water under specified conditions. For standard outdoor areas, compare NEMA 3 and NEMA 3R based on windblown sand, rain, and snow. For washdown areas, pump rooms, production lines, or locations subject to water spray, evaluate NEMA 4.

Mounting structure is equally critical. The enclosure roof must prevent prolonged water pooling, the base requires proper foundation elevation and drainage, doors must handle icing, latch operation, and long-term warping, and cable entries must block rain ingress along cables. For large enclosures in open areas, verify supports, foundations, wind loads, and maintenance access—do not focus solely on the enclosure rating.
