Determine door swing based on surrounding space, operator pathways, adjacent equipment, and cable routing. Choose left- or right-hand opening not merely by front-facing preference, but by verifying that the open door will not block aisles, strike other cabinets, or obstruct operating areas.

When enclosures are installed in corners, next to machinery, or in narrow passageways, verify the opening angle and maximum outward projection first. For side-by-side multi-enclosure setups, prevent adjacent doors from interfering with each other. Larger doors may demand more clearance, door stop mechanisms, or lift-off hinges.

Door swing direction also affects internal wiring and door-mounted components. Displays, pushbuttons, and connectors on the door require flexible wire slack, ensuring cables are not excessively bent near the hinge side. After design completion, verify clearance under four states: closed, open, operating, and servicing based on actual mounting locations.
