Standard large electrical cabinets are typically serviced by opening doors or removing panels while personnel remain outside. In contrast, walk-in electrical enclosures allow authorized personnel to enter the interior for comprehensive installation and maintenance of equipment, terminals, cables, and control systems. Therefore, walk-in design focuses on creating an accessible internal environment rather than simply increasing enclosure dimensions.

Walk-in enclosures must account for internal clear height, aisle width, turning space, front and rear equipment clearances, and entry/exit paths. Equipment cannot simply fill all space; adequate aisles and operating zones must be reserved. Electrical components, cables, grounding parts, lighting, and climate controls must also be placed to avoid obstructing movement.

Furthermore, because personnel enter live equipment zones, doors, isolation, warnings, illumination, and emergency provisions must comply with project voltage ratings, equipment types, operational methods, and applicable codes. A walk-in enclosure cannot be treated merely as a scaled-up cabinet.
