IP56 is a code defining an enclosure's ingress protection capabilities. The first digit "5" indicates dust protection, permitting limited dust ingress that must not interfere with safe, normal equipment operation. The second digit "6" indicates protection against powerful water jets from any direction.

IP56 provides higher water protection than IP55, but the first digit "5" does not mean fully dust-tight. IP56 also does not mean the enclosure can be immersed, submerged long-term, or subjected to high-pressure, high-temperature washdowns.

When sourcing an IP56 enclosure, verify doors, gaskets, cable glands, vents, viewing windows, and the fully assembled state. Meeting structural requirements for the base enclosure does not guarantee the rating remains intact once all accessories are installed.
