IP55, IP54, and IP65 all specify dust and water protection, but with different rating combinations. IP54 protects against water splashes, while IP55 protects against water jets from any direction. For IP65, the first digit "6" indicates higher dust resistance, and the second digit "5" also corresponds to water jet protection.

Selection depends on the operating environment: exposure to dust, water jets, or washdown, outdoor placement, and ventilation requirements. A higher rating is not always ideal for every project; structural design, thermal management, maintenance, and cost must also be weighed. Final ratings depend on test data of the fully assembled enclosure.
